Congratulations, Burbank! The new Hollywood Burbank Airport terminal opened on October 13, 2026, replacing the airport’s original 1930s terminal. The $1.3 billion, 355,000-square-foot building keeps the same 14 gates and moves the main entrance to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way, so the route to your flight has changed.
As a Burbank travel agency just down the road, we could not be happier for our neighbors. This airport is part of everyday life here, and a project that local voters approved in 2016 and that broke ground in 2024 is now a reality. Here is what is different, and what to know before your next flight.
What is new at the terminal
The new building sits on the opposite side of the airfield from the old one and is far larger than the 232,000-square-foot complex it replaced. According to the airport’s Elevate BUR project site, the design adds distance between the runways and the terminal, and it brings the building up to current earthquake and accessibility standards.
Inside, travelers will find a new ticketing lobby, expanded TSA screening, new shopping and dining, upgraded restrooms and more seating, charging ports and kiosks. Baggage claim has moved indoors, to a single hall with three carousels. The terminal also runs entirely on electricity.
What has not changed
Burbank has kept some of what people love. There are still 14 gates, so this is a better airport rather than a much bigger one. Passengers also still board and leave aircraft outdoors using ramps, instead of jet bridges, so keep a light jacket handy in winter.
What to know before you go
The biggest change is getting there. If you have driven to this airport for years, your habits will need updating.
Follow the new entrance. The main entrance is now at Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way, not off Thornton Avenue. Allow extra time on your first trip, and check that your map app is taking you to the new terminal.
Check your parking plan. There is a new seven-level parking structure with EV charging. Valet has moved to the new terminal, and Lot E has closed permanently. Confirm the current rates and options on the airport’s website before you leave.
Know where rideshare picks up. Rideshare passengers now use a new pickup lot near the terminal.
Rental cars still need a shuttle. Shuttles take you to the existing rental car facility across Hollywood Way.
Taking Metrolink? The Burbank Airport-North station connects to the terminal by a pedestrian path and an on-demand shuttle.
Where can you fly from Burbank?
The airport’s nonstop routes are served by airlines including Southwest, Alaska, Delta, United, American, JetBlue, Allegiant, Frontier and Breeze. It remains a great choice for shorter domestic trips. For most long-haul international travel, including flights to Armenia, LAX is still usually the main gateway, although a connection through a US hub is sometimes possible.
Routes and schedules change, so it pays to compare both airports for your dates. Our flight booking team looks at total travel time, connections and baggage, not just the fare. If you live nearby in Glendale, North Hollywood or Pasadena, we can tell you when Burbank is the better starting point.
